Everything You Need to Know before Buying a Floor Lamp with Remote Control

If you are looking for an efficient and aesthetically-pleasing lighting solution then you should look closer at dimmable floor lamps. These lamps enable you to adjust the brightness level using a remote control to suit your needs.

One of the main advantages of a floor lamp with remote control is that it is energy efficient. And hence, you will save money on your energy bills. Since you will be able to control the intensity of the light bulb, you will not be unnecessarily wasting energy. Plus, the lighting will be gentle on your eyes.

Before you rush to buy the first dimmable floor lamp, you should know more about it so that you can make an informed buying decision.

Floor Lamps Have Incandescent or Halogen Bulbs

Halogen bulbs are similar to incandescent bulbs but with a difference. Their light intensity is high, making the output the same as an incandescent bulb. Incandescent bulbs have a filament, which heats up when an electric current passes through it. This heated filament creates light and usually the color tone is white or yellowish.

Unlike incandescent bulbs, halogen bulbs don’t produce harsh lighting. Usually, they have cooler lighting, which has a purplish-blue color tone. These bulbs produce more uniform lighting but of high intensity.

The good news is that most remote-controlled floor lamps usually have dimmable incandescent bulbs. Hence, they are perfect for different applications at home and the workplace.

Metal or Plastic Remote Controlled Floor Lamp?

Pay attention to the base of the floor lamp. You can get a metal base, which is usually made from stainless steel. On the other hand, a plastic base means it is made from polycarbonate.

Just like your rechargeable folding desk lamp, which has a metal base, a floor lamp with a metal base is usually preferable. Metals are more sturdy and durable and you do not have to worry about the base getting warped due to the heat generated by the lamp.

If you are looking for a floor lamp for your living room, bathroom, or kitchen, a metal base will be a good choice. However, be mindful that the base could rust in due course if you use it in the bathroom or kitchen where there is high moisture content. If you are worried about rust and corrosion, you should go with a plastic base as such a floor lamp will be more durable and resilient compared to one with a metal base.

Not the Right Lighting Solution for Outdoor Use

A remote-controlled floor lamp is not designed for outdoor use since it tends to heat up with use. These lamps are meant for indoor use, where the environment is dry. While there is nothing stopping you from using your floor lamp with remote control in your garden, take into account the humidity and temperature levels.

While you may not be aware, most dimmable floor lamps come with a maximum operating temperature. This limit is 158 degrees Fahrenheit. If the lamp heats up beyond this temperature, it will overheat and result in a fire. So, be careful about using your floor lamp in your garden.

Always Pay Attention to the Bulb

Conventional bulbs are different from the ones you find in remote-controlled floor lamps. These bulbs cannot be dimmed using the remote control, and if you do use them, the bulbs will overheat and lead to a fire or explosion, in the worst-case scenario.

So make sure that you check the specifications of the bulb before using it in the dimmable floor lamp. It can be potentially dangerous to use the wrong bulb. The good news is that modern-day floor lamps are compatible with LED bulbs but before using check with the lamp manufacturer.

In Conclusion

Now you know the important details to look for when you want to invest in a remote-controlled floor lamp. Make sure you find a reputable brand so that you have peace of mind when buying a dimmable floor lamp or the best cordless desk lamp. A good brand is not necessarily expensive.
